Ice climbers, glacier hikers and all other adventurous souls exploring the ice can spend hours in freezing temperatures, putting their feet at risk of frostbite. To expose their feet to such harsh conditions, climbers get the best gear they can

  • Warm
  • Sturdy and
  • Protective.

We envisioned something that would provide that and much more: a shoe that would warn you when in danger of getting frostbite. We called it the DeFrost.

HOW IT WORKS

DeFrost helps you delay the onset of frostbite.

It does so by alerting you visually when you have been exposed to the elements for too long, when your chances of developing frostbite start to exponentially increase.

VISUAL CUES

The first signal DeFrost gives you, is it lights up blue intermittently, to suggest that it’s time to find shelter. The blue light will blink up steadily faster, until it is critical that you find shelter. If this critical point is reached, the light will stay on until you find shelter.

PHYSICAL AIDS

The DeFrost shoe will also physically aid you to delay the onset of frostbite. Once that critical stage has been reached, it will stimulate blood flow in the toes through vibrations.

WHAT'S IN THE SHOE

The shoe has a simple electronic circuitcomposed of a few sensors and gadgets that will help you in your ice climbing adventures.

SENSORS

  • Temperature sensor: will keep track of how long your foot is under sub-optimal temperature conditions. The sensor is  located in the toe area, as the extremities of the foot are the most prone to frost bite.
  • Light sensor: to detect if it's dawn, dusk or if you are perhaps deep inside of a cave.

GADGETS

  • A vibe module: it helps stimulate blood flow once activated, to reduce the risk of frostbite.
  • LEDs: at the front of the shoe, so that you will always be able to see the path in front of you or find that next important foothold area.
